9 things to check before you hire anyone
1. Licensed, bonded, and insured in Texas
Texas doesn’t have a statewide license for general garage door contractors, but liability insurance IS required for anyone working on your property. Ask the company to email you their general liability certificate before they show up. If they hedge, call someone else.
2. Can they give you a price on the phone?
Every reputable company should be able to quote a starting price for common jobs without sending a truck. Spring repair = $189-$250 range. Opener repair diagnostic = $99-$149. New opener = $450-$600 installed. Full door replacement = $1,000+.

Ask: “If it’s a LiftMaster 8500 with a bad capacitor, can you fix it on the first visit?” A real shop says “yes — capacitor, drive gear, and logic board for that model all on the truck.” A flaky shop says “we’ll order it.”
Ordering = second trip = second fee in a lot of cases.
8. Local presence (not a call center)
If the phone is answered by a scripted operator who “needs to verify your address and name” before transferring you, it’s a national call center dispatching to whoever’s cheapest to sub. Real local shops answer the phone in 2-3 rings, the dispatcher knows the area, and can tell you which tech is nearest.

Ask straight up: “If I call for a spring repair, will the tech try to sell me a full door replacement?” An honest company says “we’ll flag anything else we notice but we don’t upsell — it’s your door.” A sales-first company deflects.

5 red flags that should make you hang up
- Super-low advertised spring price ($79, $99). Bait pricing. They’ll “discover” your door needs a different spring for $450 once the tech is there.
- No physical address on their website. Fly-by-night or out-of-state franchise.
- Pressuring you to book immediately. “We only have one slot today.” Manufactured urgency.
- They won’t text you the quote. Verbal-only quotes can change on the driveway.
- Refusal to accept credit cards. Cash-only is a sign of unregistered/uninsured operations.
